Q Will the RAHC have clinical training sites in other cities besides Harlingen?
A The RAHC medical education programs are centered in Harlingen; however, medical students receive their clinical education in various hospitals and clinics in the Valley. The UT Health Science Center San Antonio has faculty, and affiliations with hospitals and clinics, throughout the Valley. This will provide additional opportunities for expanding the medical education programs at the RAHC.
Q What about the research facilities of the RAHC ... what kind of research will take place there and when will it begin?
A Construction of the first basic research facility of the RAHC’s Medical Research Division (E-RAHC) has been completed and this campus was dedicated on April 25, 2006. This state-of-the-art research facility is located in Edinburg and will provide the first of its kind biomedical research infrastructure in the Lower Rio Grande Valley (LRGV). In order to complement the basic research activities conducted at the E-RAHC, the UT Health Science Center San Antonio established a clinical research center in the Academic and Clinical Research building located in the Harlingen RAHC. This facility was dedicated in December 2007 and in addition to space for conducting clinical research trials this clinical research center will include an imaging core. This is also the first facility of its kind in the Rio Grande Valley and research activities are now underway in the area of human nutrition. Research conducted in these RAHC research facilities will focus on diseases that disproportionately affect the border populations of South Texas—particularly diabetes and certain infectious diseases. Through the RAHC this border region will have in place a collaborative and integrated research enterprise that will apply transitional research principles between RAHC campuses in Harlingen and Edinburg in collaboration with the UT Health Science Center San Antonio campus located in San Antonio. Through this research one important goal is to improve the health of communities in this border region of South Texas.

A An extension of UT Health Science Center San Antonio is located in Laredo. It is not part of the Valley's RAHC.
