Student Selection

The first group of 24 students (Class of 2004) moved to Harlingen at the end of their second year in 2002. They rotated through all of the clinical clerkships including Internal Medicine, Surgery, Ob/Gyn, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, and Family and Community Medicine. Most of those students elected to have their clinical training at the RAHC. Some students were selected by lottery for that clinical training experience.

There will be no lottery for the current entering class to select the RAHC students. One alternative now under consideration to facilitate assignment of students to either the Harlingen- or San Antonio-based clinical facilities involves ranking of San Antonio and/or the RAHC as the clinical education site in the TMDSAS match. Interviewing at UT Health Science Center at San Antonio School of Medicine would afford students the opportunity to separately rank the UT Health Science Center at San Antonio School of Medicine - San Antonio Clinical Education Campus and the UT Health Science Center at San Antonio School of Medicine at San Antonio - RAHC Clinical Education Campus. One hundred seventy six students would be matched to the San Antonio campus and 24 students would be matched to the Harlingen RAHC campus.

We anticipate deciding on the assignment method in early November at which time we will provide additional information. There will be plenty of time for students to finalize your ranking by the December 31st deadline. Students will be able to visit the regional campus to familiarize themselves with the clinical education opportunities and to visit with our current RAHC students.
