William L. Henrich, M.D., M.A.C.P.
Dean, School of Medicine
Dr. Henrich came to UTHSCSA in 2006. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine and is Board Certified in Nephrology.
He received his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston and he is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. He is the President-elect of the American Society of Nephrology. He has served on the Editorial Board of the American Journal of Kidney
Diseases and has received numerous national awards for his research in
nephrology and leadership in the medical profession. Prior to being in San Antonio, he has won several outstanding teaching awards while at
the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School and the University
of Maryland School of Medicine. Dr. Henrich is a reviewer and editorial board member for several renal and internal medicine journals.
Leonel Vela, MD, MPH
Dean, Regional Academic Health Center
Professor of Family and Community Medicine
Dr. Vela attended medical school at Baylor College of Medicine. He was a
Kellogg Fellow in Health Policy and Management at Harvard University
where he also received his Masters in Public Health. He completed
epidemiology training at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
and postgraduate training in community medicine and preventive medicine.
Before coming to the UTHSCSA in 2000, Dr. Vela was the first Marie Hall
Chair in Rural and Community Health and Associate Professor of Family
and Community Medicine at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center.
Robert A. Clark, MD, FACP
Chairman of Medicine
Dr. Clark attended medical school at the Columbia University College of
Physicians and Surgeons, completed internal medicine residency training
at the University of Washington and Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in
NY, and fellowship training in infectious disease at the National
Institutes of Health. He has served on the faculties of the University
of Washington, Boston University, and the University of Iowa prior to
joining the UTHSCSA in 1994. Dr. Clark is board certified in internal
medicine and a member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation
and the Association of American Physicians.
George E. Crawford, MD, FACP
Associate Chairman of Medicine for Education
Chief of Infectious Diseases
Dr. Crawford attended medical school at the Feinberg School of Medicine,
Northwestern University, and was trained in Internal Medicine at the
Massachusetts General Hospital. He completed a Fellowship in Infectious
Diseases at the University of Washington. He was a medical officer in
the United States Air Force, retiring as a Colonel in 1997. During his
career he was the Chairman of Medicine at Malcolm Grow Medical Center,
and Chairman of Medicine and Internal Medicine Program Director at David
Grant Medical Center and Wilford Hall Medical Center. He was appointed
as the Internal Medicine Consultant to the Air Force Surgeon General.
Honors include AOA and American College of Physicians Laureate. He
joined UTHSCSA in 1997 and directs the Office of Education and the
Infectious Disease Division.
James F. Hanley, M.D.
Program Director
Dr. Hanley attended medical school at the University of Connecticut in
Farmington, Connecticut. He entered the army, and completed residency
training in Internal Medicine at Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma,
WA. His Army career included being Chief of Medicine at Fort Deven Army
Meddac. Chief of General Medicine and Assistant Chief of Medicine at
Brooke Army Medical Center, Chief of Medicine at Landstuhl Army Medical
Center, Chief of Medicine and Program Director at Fitzsimmons Army
Medical Center in Aurora, Colorado. He retired as a Colonel in 1996. During his Army career he received
many awards to include the Legion of Merit and "A" designator.
From 1996-2002 he was the Chair of Medicine and Program Director at the
University of North Dakota School of Medicine. He as received numerous
honors to included AOA, American College of Physician Laureate Award -
Army Chapter, American College of Physicians Laureate Award - North
Dakota Chapter. Dr. Hanley is Board Certified in Internal Medicine.
Dr. Hanley is board certified in
Internal Medicine, with added qualification in Geriatric Medicine. Dr.
Hanley has overseen the RAHC program since 2002.
Deborah Baruch-Bienen, MD, FACP
UTHSCSA-RAHC Department of Medicine Liaison
Dr. Baruch-Bienen graduated medical school at the University of
Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry, Rochester New York, in 1995.
She then began her first active duty tour at Wilford Hall Medical Center
(WHMC), Lackland Air Force Base as an Internal Medicine Resident. She
completed residency at WHMC in 1998, and remained there as a faculty
member. Dr. Baruch-Bienen began her academic career with UTHSCSA 1 July
2002. Her duties include the oversight and support of the Internal
Medicine Residency at the Regional Academic Health Center, Harlingen
Texas. In 2005, she was appointed Associate Chief of Medical Services at Audie Murphy VA Hospital
in San Antonio. She is an instructor of General Medicine and Bioethics for IM
residents and medical students in all 4 years.
